Colon Cancer Screening Statistics

Well earned reputation with documented quality at less cost .

Gastroenterologists are encouraged to calculate their Adenoma Detection Rate as a measure of colon cancer screening effectiveness. ADR is calculated at number of male or female patients with one precancerous polyp on the first (index) screening study. Many patients have more than one precancerous (and non-precancerous polyps) identified at index colonoscopy. However, these additional polyps are not included in the calculation.

Another quality measure is the withdrawal time. Large studies have identified an average withdrawal time of 6 minutes as effective. Longer withdrawal times do not increase the efficiency of the gastroenterologist.

Many studies have shown that non gastroenterology trained physicians who perform colonoscopy have significantly lower cecal intubation rates, adenoma detection rates and higher complication rates.

Other measures include complication rates such as perforation and bleeding.
