Defacography:
A x-ray study used to assess the coordination and function of the muscles in the rectum during evacuation.

Dehydration:
The loss of body fluids resulting in decreased intravascular volume (fluid within the blood vessels). Patients may be treated with increased oral solutions containing electrolytes and carbohydrates or may require intravenous administration of fluids.

Delayed gastric emptying:
A decreased rate of emptying of stomach contents. Also called gastroparesis.

Dermatitis herpetiformis:
A skin disorder usually associated with celiac disease.

Descending colon:
A portion of the colon located in the left part of the abdomen. The part colon extending from splenic flexure to the sigmoid colon.

Diaphragm:
The collection of muscles separating the abdomen from the chest. Diaphragm is commonly used to movement of the lungs so that a bellows type affect occurs resulting in exchange rare.

Diarrhea:
The occurrence of frequent loose watery bowel movements. Is usually consists of stool volumes > 200 ml per day.

Dietitian:
A professional who specializes in the assessment and treatment of nutritional disorders.

Digestion:
The term referring to the entire process of breaking down food into simple substances, its absorption and subsequent storage in the body.

Digestive system:
The term referring to the entire digestive tract. The digestive tract includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, pancreas, biliary tract, liver, colon and rectum. In addition the salivary glands located in the mouth are included within this term.

Distention:
A condition in which bloating or swelling of the abdomen occurs due to the build up of gas.

Diverticula:
A term describing small outpouching of the colon wall. Diverticula is the pleural form of diverticulum.

Diverticulitis:
An infection of diverticula. This usually produces left lower quadrant abdominal pain. Simple antibiotics usually result in excellent control. Complications of diverticulitis include abscess formation and perforation. Bleeding may also occur.

Dubin-Johnson Syndrome:
An inherited form of the jaundice. This is a metabolic abnormality that is benign.

Dumping Syndrome:
A condition where food moves rapidly from stomach into the small intestine. Patients experience pain, weakness, sweating and nausea. Usually this is associated with surgical operations in the stomach.

Duodenal ulcer:
An ulcer involving the first portion of the small intestine or duodenum.

Duodenitis:
An irritation of first portion of the small intestine (duodenum).

Duodenum:
The first part of small intestine.

Dysentery:
An infectious disease of the colon. A patient has profound weight loss, fluid loss, fever and abdominal pain.

Dyspepsia:
A term used refer to any acid related cause of abdominal pain.

Dysphagia:
A blockage or inability to pass solid food or liquids through the esophagus into the stomach.
